PROS:

1. Knowing your position on a matter before you write an essay about it

2. Strong thesis

3. Considering complexity and sources

4. Connecting thoughts to data (author’s thoughts)

5. Not assuming the audience’s knowledge of what you are talking about

6. Expanding the issue further than simply stating your claims

7. Including your own experiences/outside knowledge

8. Citing information

9. Using information from at least 3 credible sources

CONS:

1. Illegible penmanship

2. Being vague

3. Summarizing

4. Weak thesis statement

5. Undecided position- teetering back and forth, unstable

6. Examples, facts, etc. that are not cited

7. Misunderstanding sources/data- true meanings

8. Statements/claims without or lacking commentary and/or proof- plopping

9. Incomplete thoughts- not developed enough

10. Abrupt transitions- being choppy

TIPS:

1. Read directions carefully

2. Make direct and indirect citations

3. Take a position before you begin writing

4. Find the writer’s position/stance on the matter after you read it

5. Don’t become overwhelmed! >_<”
